Kristin Ohlson’s The Soil Will Save Us

With all the negative press out there on global warming, it’s refreshing to read a book that offers solutions and hope. Kristin Ohlson’s “The Soil Will Save Us” covers how scientists, farmers and foodies are healing the soil to save the planet.

Kristin’s clear storytelling explains the connection between soil carbon and climate change through Dr. Rattan Lal’s story. Dr. Lal is the director of Ohio State University’s Carbon management and Sequestration Center. His message is clear, not only can we can stop carbon loss from the soil but we can also build and retain more carbon in soil.

Kristin weaves in the story of North Dakota farmer, Gabe Brown and 40 other farmers and ranchers who have done what many thought impossible: building healthy, carbon-rich healthy soil while increasing yields and profit margins. Kristin engagingly tells us how it was done. No, I’m not going to tell you how. Suffice it to say that it didn’t include synthetic fertilizes, pesticides or herbicides.

Ok, I will take pity on you, here’s a short 4 min clip of Gabe Brown explaining a few things he did to make his soil healthy.

These are only two examples of Kristin’s engaging and hopeful stories about soil and the people who are making a difference with our soil and our planet and there are more in the book.

Don’t let the breezy easy-to-read style lull you into thinking this is a lightweight book. It’s an important book for our times. I read Kristin’s book twice. I went through it quickly the first time, greedily drinking up the stories. The second time, I went through with a pen, marking passages that spoke to me.

The Soil Will Save Us is such a riveting book, I invited Kristin to guest host on #groundchat and give us a short synopsis of her book. Here’s the transcript.

Also, check out Kristin Ohlson in this lovely 4 min video briefly covering her book and promoting the Soil In The City conference in Los Angeles Feb. 24 & 25 2015.

Some people may criticize the book because it doesn’t cover in detail the scientists who have issues with the assertions and solutions covered in the book. I don’t agree. We get to hear about the naysayers and the doomsayers every day. It’s about time someone focused on success stories and possible solutions to our climate dilemma. Enjoy!
