Fabulous Soil Drainage
What does it mean to have a well-drained soil? How do I know if I have well-drained soil?
Basically it means water moves through the soil in a timely manner that’s optimal for growth of most plants.
Figuring out if you have well-drained soil is relatively easy.
What you need:
Trowel or hoe
Water
Watering can or hose
Watch
Follow the simple instructions below:
- Dig a hole 30 cm deep and 30 cm wide (1 foot by 1 foot)
- Fill the hole with water (use a watering can or garden hose)
- Watch to see how long it takes to drain
What does the time for drainage mean?
0-15 minutes: Your soil is sandy; it will not hold nutrients or water
30 – 60 minutes: Your soil is just right. It drains well
More than 24 hours: Your soil is too full of clay to drain well.
