When to Prune Trees & Shrubs

When should you prune?

Spring-flowering trees & shrubs

Prune shortly after they finished flowering and after leaves have fully opened.

Summer-flowering trees & shrubs

Prune late winter to early spring, before the leaves appear.

Evergreens

Prune when evergreens are actively growing in late spring.

All other trees & shrubs

Prune while dormant in late winter to early spring before the leaves open.

Exception: birch and maple trees. Prune in full leaf, about July.
