Gardening trends put into perspective!

Last year I found out that plant breeders follow fashion to determine colours for their annuals. I was surprised. It’s not the gardening community that was setting the colour trends. So I wondered, how are other gardening trends set?

Last Saturday I saw pallets being used as vertical containers at Canada Blooms.  Pallet gardening is being touted as a new trend. But who or what set this trend? A quick Google search revealed that Fern Richardson of Life on the Balcony wrote a blog on pallet gardening on March 25, 2011and the idea took off.

Good www.point-moneygram.com thing too. A joint study by USDA Forest Service and Virginia Tech revealed that in 1995, 223.6 million pallets ended up in landfills.

Last night #Gardenchat had a tweetup on gardening trends. Growing your own food appeared many times. I do think that vegetable gardening is a current trend in the USA and Canada, fuelled by the uncertain economy. But this growing your own has been here before and it disappeared.

Victory Gardens were a huge in Canada, United States and United Kingdom during World War I and World War II. Vegetable, herb and fruit gardens were touted as everyone’s patriotic duty. Not only did these gardens provide food, but they also freed resources for the war effort. But the gardens fizzled out in the early 1950s.

So will the food gardens of today disappear when the economy improves? I am hoping it is here to stay. As Joe Lutey (@joelutely said last night on #Gardenchat, “We need to keep making gardening less of a trend, and more of a way of life.”
