Fall Stands for Fantastic Colours! Shrubs!
Five best fall shrubs Part 2 of 3
With trees front and center, it’s understandable why shrubs get overlooked. But this fall, let us remember some amazing understated shrubs. My five favourite fall foliage shrubs include:

Arrowwood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum) Leaves turn dark green to yellow then to red in the fall. Grows to 8 ft (2.5m) high and 15ft (4.5m) wide. Zones 2 to 8.
Burning bush (Euynomus alata) … fabulous intense red colour, almost fluorescent. One of the most compact varieties –’Rudy Haag’ – grows to 5 ft high and wide. Some varieties can grow to 15 to 20 ft high and wide … which is way larger that most bushes I’ve seen. Most people over prune their burning bushes! Zones 4 to 8.
Goldflame Spirea (Spiraea bumalda ‘Goldflame’) bronze-red to red fall foliage. Height and width 3 ft (100cm). Zones 4 to 8.
Tiger Eyes Sumac (Rhus typhina ‘Bailtiger’). To quote the marketing blurb on the President’s Choice garden website: “the leaves turn a mind-blowing orange, red and yellow.” They do. No exaggeration. I bought a Tiger Eyes Sumac this spring, and photographs don’t begin to capture the intensity of the colours. Grows to 6 ft (1.8m) high and 8 ft (2.4m) wide. Zones 3-9.
Witchhazel (Hamamelis x intermedia). In the fall, the dark green to bluish green round leaves develop gorgeous yellow and red tints. Grows to 10 to 20 ft (3m to 6m) high with different spreads, depending on variety. Zones 5 to 8.
