Gardening in October
Today, I volunteered 6 hours at the Mississauga Master Gardeners’ booth at the International Home Show. My reward for giving advice all day is discovering the number one gardening question in late October.
“Can I still plant bulbs?” received top billing today. And yes, there still is time. You can plant spring-blooming bulbs in the ground right up to snow time.
Of course, ways of deterring squirrels from digging and eating tulips and crocuses was another popular question. Blood meal or chicken manure work well. After a rain, replenish the blood meal.
Some seasoned gardeners mix delectable tulips with the less palatable daffodils, alliums, fritillaria, scilla and grape hyacinth.
That’s it for today…a longer blog tomorrow.
