Canada Blooms!

Canada Blooms is on every day this week! Every year I pour over the Canada Blooms guide and walk through the event to check for any soil-related presentations, garden displays and products. I am thrilled that Canada Blooms has acknowledged FAO’s 2015 International Year of Soils with several activities and presentations.

Canada Blooms soil activities

For the young and young at heart, Floral Dimensions has sponsored Get Dirty!, an activity area providing hands-on experience on telling the difference between a plant and a weed, a spade and a hoe, and soil versus compost.

The Compost Council of Canada has a booth displaying the benefits of compost. Afterwards you can wander over to Veggie Guys to ask how you can grow your vegetables. Great-looking vegetable plants, Veggie Guys!

Canada Blooms soil presentations

This year there’re three presentations on soil! I will be at each one, for sure. If you want to join me, here’s the information.

On Tuesday, Mary Beerman and John Montague chat about healthy soil for roses at 11 a.m. at the Garden Solutions Stage. At 1 p.m. Mary and John discuss the importance of healthy soil at the Learning Stage.

I met John and Mary last year at Canada Blooms. Their presentations are up-to-date and full of good information. They both work at The Glen Road Organics, a certified organic farm that produces quality organic compost and potting mixes. They know soil!

On Thursday at 4 p.m., Canadian gardening celebrity Jim Hole presents Developing a Sense of Humus on the Celebrity Stage. I’ve lived in Alberta and my husband grew up in Alberta, so I can tell you with some authority, Albertans love their puns! Jim Hole is the co-owner of Hole’s Greenhouses and Gardens Ltd in St. Albert, Alberta and has also written bestselling garden books.

I thoroughly recommend going to Canada Blooms this year. The only caveat I have is the poor lighting of the show. An iPhone isn’t enough; bring a SLR camera or a camera with different settings if you want to take halfway decent photos.
