TBG’s Through the Garden Gate garden tour in The Kingsway

Toronto Botanical Garden has a fundraising garden tour every year. This year the garden tour, Through the Garden Gate, is in The Kingsway. Is it worth going to? My verdict is…

The Kingsway garden

Garden tours are one of my favourite things to do. Beats chocolate and Netflix. Hands down. Over the last 10 years, I must have clocked over 30 garden tours. I’m a bit of a garden tour connoisseur, and I’ve developed an eye for good gardens. In other words, I’m somewhat critical and snobby. LOL! It’s a gift, I’m told.

So, when I say that this year’s Toronto Botanical Garden’s garden tour, Through the Garden Gate in The Kingsway neighbourhood is a must-see event, believe it. On the media tour last week, I analytically viewed 7 out of the 18 gardens being showcased in this year’s garden tour. All of them passed muster. Great plantings. Innovative solutions to problematic terrain. Superb designs.  The backdrop of exclusive Tudor-style early 1900s homes on mature tree-lined trees didn’t hurt either!

The soil angle? Most of the gardens are growing on sandy soils. Paul Zammit, director of horticulture at the Toronto Botanical Garden, who lives close to this neighbourhood, says “you can dig 5 feet down and still have sandy soil.”

I’ve heard many-a-gardener complaining about their sandy soil and despairing on what to grow in their low fertility, well-draining soil. The Kingsway garden tour a great way to see how gardeners and landscapers in this ritzy neighbourhood have dealt with this problem. This garden tour is the answer to sandy soil gardeners’ prayers. Speaking of questions and answers, there will be Master Gardeners stationed at each garden to answer any questions about the plant materials and design features. Hopefully the soil too!
