Gorgeous, glorious tomatoes. I owe a year’s college tuition to tomatoes. While at university decades ago, I snagged a summer job working with Heinz, the ketchup people. I spent a wonderful summer in Leamington, Ontario cross-pollinating tomatoes, walking across tomato fields and meeting all kinds of people whose livelihood depended on tomatoes. It was also a coming-of-age summer. I owe tomatoes a great deal.

 

Tomatoes are not only big business, but also the most beloved of our homegrown produce. So on this Friday’s #groundchat, June 26, 2015 at 2 pm EST, Craig LeHoullier, author of Epic Tomatoes, chats about perfect soil conditions for growing tomatoes as well as his favourite tomatoes.

 

Craig LeHoullier passion for collecting, researching and growing hundreds of varieties of tomatoes led him to write Epic Tomatoes. How To Select & Grow the Best Varieties of All Time (published by Storey Publishing, 256 pages, 2015 ). Craig is not only an active member in the Seed Savers Exchange, but also writes a regular newsletter and blog at From the Vine. Craig lives and gardens in Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife Susan and a hodgepodge of dogs and cats. He’s the perfect guy to talk about tomatoes on #groundchat!

My favourite tomato recipe? A scrumptious summer salad.

Tomato-and-avocado salad

4 to 6 serving

 Ingredients

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

½ teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

3 drops red pepper sauce

2 medium avocados, cubed

3 tablespoons of ready made crumbled bacon

2 medium tomatoes, cut into ¼ -inches pieces

1 small onion, finely chopped

salad greens.

 

Mix oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and red pepper sauce; pour over avocados in a glass bowl. Toss. Stir in bacon, tomatoes and onion. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours. Just before serving, place tomato-avocado mix on the salad greens with a slotted spoon. Tuck in and enjoy. I hope you’ll enjoy the salad as much as I do.

  1. I love tomatoes but gave up growing them. Too much drama and disease. I let the tomato guy at the Farmers Market do it for me. :o)

    Found this book at the library and read it! Excellent with focus on heirlooms and I depth info on author’s top cultivar picks.
