In 2001 Laura Surman took a fulltime position as a program coordinator at an adult centre; her craft business took a nose dive. As much as she loved the craft business, she couldn’t work fulltime and do the shows. But there was an upside.

I’m thrilled that Brampton, my hometown, is the first Canadian community to receive Scotts GRO 1000 $1500 grant (monetary and in-kind support) for the Children’s Community Garden. By 2018 — Scotts’ 150th anniversary — the GRO 1000 program will back the creation of 1, 000 new gardens and green spaces across the US, Canada and Europe.

Like all good ideas for gardens, the layout of the Royal Botanical Gardens’ Veggie Village, started off with a rough sketch on a napkin. With the sketch in hand, a small team (Sandra Spudic (gardener), Anne Abram (student gardener) and Anita Dyson (student gardener)) turned Belinda Gallagher’s (Head of Horticulture), dream into reality.
