Crafty Garden
In 2001 Laura Surman took a fulltime position as a program coordinator at an adult centre; her craft business took a nose dive. As much as she loved the craft business, she couldn’t work fulltime and do the shows. But there was an upside.

“When I finished that, I didn’t go back to sewing,” says Laura. “I didn’t go back to crafts, but all my love, my focus and my passion went into gardening. It was a really nice transition.”
Laura’s garden is relatively new. She moved into her new house in October, 2006. Laura had the extra challenge in making her garden wheelchair accessible for her husband. She wanted to make sure that the hardscape was right. Eight plans later, Laura had something she could work with. In July 2007, the landscapers started the hardscape.
“Make the hardscapes bigger than you think you’re going to need because you’ll need them bigger,” Laura advises “Our deck appears huge, but for the number of people we have on it, it’s the size we need. We’ve had parties for the guys in the sledge hockey team. There will be 6 or 8 of them in wheelchairs, and you can move around and it’s not crowded at all.”
Laura confesses to being a specimen gardener…she loves anything with blue flowers. Even with the wide variety of colors, shades, and shapes in her plantings, Laura’s garden looks unified. Why? Because of Laura’s quilting expertise. She knows how to blend textures and colours. Now that’s mastery.
